Lifestyle property has been in heavy demand, including from people looking to move in from elsewhere, attracted from Nelson and Marlborough by proximity to Christchurch. As in other regions, lifestyle listings are in short supply, generally attracting committed interest and multiple offers.

Rural property meanwhile is currently regarded as a sensible investment: a positive place to put money in the medium or long term. Most autumn sales were of sheep and beef property, though after a long hiatus, interest in the region’s dairy farms has recommenced, and transactions are again happening.

Farmers are confident, though the dry autumn discouraged listings, particularly among those who are short of alternative options for their capital. Heavy rain at the start of June bodes well for presentation of quality properties in the spring, when several are likely to be offered for sale.
